Kimbo vs Big Country – Round by Round

Kimbo vs Big Country

Kimbo vs Big Country

I’ve been pretty jazzed about tonight’s “Ultimate Fighter” ever since last week’s show.  The entire season has been built around Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson, even though he’s hardly the strongest fighter on the series.  He’s definately the most marketable.  The favourite to win right now is Roy “Big Country” Nelson, so of course when Rashad Evans got control of the matchmaking, he put his man Nelson up against Rampage Jackson’s Kimbo.

It’s with that in mind that I asked Kaylin what her pick was.

“Hmmm, I think Kimbo will win. Is that hug fighting daddy?” – yes darling, it is indeed the hug fighting.

So with Kimbo as the household favourite, I thought I’d set out to do a round-by-round blow-by-blow report ala my old TSN.ca wrestling reports.

To quote Mike Goldberg. And…here…we…GO!

Top 5 Gadgets of 2008

This board isn't bored!

This board isn't bored!

I forgot to post my favourite gadgets of last year with the preview of what I’m lusting after this year.  This is always the most closely read article in my house as it gives Charlene a glimpse into what I’m going to be wasting money on investing in this year.

I got a good number of toys in 2008, although I managed to mostly restrain myself, especially when it came to the iPhone, which I nearly bought on several occasions.  The key to this year has been keeping costs down, and while it may look like I bought a lot of stuff, I try to maintain a “revenue neutral” position when I buy stuff.  For example I sold stuff to buy the PS3 (my HD DVD player and movies).  This year there are things I covet which I doubt I’ll get (like the eBook reader), and others that I’ll get if I can get them cheap enough (iPod touch). Good bye HD DVD, hello Blu Ray

The Sony PS3

The Sony PS3

Well, I did it.  Last week in a moment of weakness I sold my HD DVD discs, put the HD DVD player up for auction, and went out and bought myself a Blu Ray player…a PS3 to be specific.

The deal at Rogers video was too good to pass up.  I’ve been eyeing a Blu Ray player for a while because I’m just enough of an AV snob to love the way high def movies look on the HD DVD player.  With nothing new coming out, I just needed a fix. Continue Reading

So uuber lame that it just might be cool

Star Wars hoodies by Marc Ecko

Star Wars hoodies by Marc Ecko

I like Marc Ecko, I had a really cool Marc Ecko yellow shirt once that Charlene hated with the firey heat of a thousand burning suns.  Unfortunately most of his stuff is a little too “Affliction” for my tastes.

However their new Star Wars line is pretty cool.  In my opinion this hoodie, may be the coolest thing I’ve seen in a while…or perhaps the lamest.  So lame in fact that it’s gone 180 degrees back around and become cool again!  This one however might be lame (although I’m on the fence on it, it might have gone like 190 degrees or something, and is just over-cool).

I loved that Boba Fett hoodie so much that I went to buy one, only to find out that Marc Ecko won’t ship to Canada.

Damn.

Maks O’Brian joins our clan

Here's Maks O'Brian as he gets his first test.

Here is Maks as he gets his first test

Today at 1:20pm, we welcomed the newest addition to our family as Maks O’Brian without too much fuss.

Char woke up at 4am, tossing and turning and woke me up around 5 (of course last night was the night I decided to catch up on some work and TV at the same time and ended up crawling into bed around 2:30).  She woke me up again at 5:30 asking for Tylenol (which our midwife had recommended).  I got in the car and drove, looking for a 24 hour store that would sell Tylenol…not an easy feat when you’re groggy.  In the process I almost killed a skunk on Oxford, and had to hit two stores to find Tylenol (and then I only got Regular Strength).

My media center is dead…long live the media center!

The Windows Vista Media Center interface

The Windows Vista Media Center interface

My media center box, the unit which does all of my TV recording and all that good stuff, finally gave up the ghost this week.  Early Wednesday morning we had a big storm which flickered our power.  When I got home last night I decided to see what the Media Center had recorded recently.  When I powered it up, I got a little surprise.  Nothing, no familliar “whirr”, no little “buzz, click wizz”, nothing.  I took it apart and saw that the motherboard was getting some power, but something wasn’t working.

So the problem might be the power supply, it could be the CPU, it might even be the motherboard, or a bad RAM stick.  Who knows for sure?

Last night I quickly priced out how much it would cost me to replace one or more of those items, and I came to a sad realization.

No iPhone for me.  🙁 Continue Reading

iPhone…you are dead to me

When Steve Jobs first announced the 2nd generation iPhone, and Rogers then announced that it would be coming to Canada, I wanted to buy one.  As a matter of fact, if it had been available that day, I would likely have forgone the P.O. process and rushed right out to buy one.

However, lucklily I live in Canada, and in Canada we don’t get electronics day and date with those citizens who live two hours to my South, no we have to wait months, sometimes years (the original iPhone has still not made it to the frozen tundras of my home and native land).

In this case however that’s a good thing.  It’s a little more than a month later, and the bloom is definately off that rose for me. Continue Reading

Go Gadget Dad! The Harmony Remote

The Harmony 880 RemoteThis is the first in what I hope to become a monthly installment called “The Gadget Dad”, a look at the gadgets that I find incredibly useful in my everyday life. Right now there are things that are not in your house that you can’t live without, and you don’t even know it.

Take the Harmony Remote.

On the surface it’s an all in one remote, which means that it controls all of the devices in your living room. The first benefit is that instead of having 8 remotes in your living room, you can have 1. This is good. However that’s not what makes the Harmony Remote the best remote on the market. There are hundreds of remotes which can control all of the devices in your home with one remote…what they can’t do is activities. Continue Reading

I got served by the Windows Home Server

Media Smart Home ServerWith our lives relying more and more on digital media, and Char’s initial forays into the land of Freelance Editing, it’s time to get serious about back-up, restore, and all of the other PC things that most folks take for granted. I’ve read some really great reviews about the HP MediaSmart Home Server, so when I finally found one for a great price on eBay, I jumped at it and bought it.

I set it up and configured it tonight, and while I’ve only scratched the surface, I’m really happy so far. Continue Reading

Montreal is Affliction crazy!

George St. Pierre wins the undisputed welterweight titleI’m not sure what I’ll remember more, the crowd which was so loud that my ears are still ringing today…or the fact that I have now seen 20,000 Affliction t-shirts and never want to see one again.

The show was amazing, George won, Serra was dominated, and the crowd went wild. The UFC has never experienced a Canadian crowd before, but one of the main reasons that WWE does so many of their PPV events up in Canada is because of how incredible the crowds are on TV. Continue Reading
