What I’m playing – the summer edition

My Profile on

My Profile on

I managed to get a fair amount of gaming in this summer, much to my wife’s chagrin.  The majority of it is all casual, or quick games that I can play for ten or twenty minute stretches in between all of the other stuff I do, but it’s fun nonetheless.

Here’s my list of games I’ve played over the summer. Continue Reading

Some cool web links I’m reading

Here’s a bunch of web links I’ve been looking at this week.

How to Add Drop Shadows to Menus or Windows with CSS
This one looks cool as I consider ways of improving my various sites and consider how to make stuff a little more graphical while still being semantic and clean.

UI is the Killer Feature
Yeah it is! You can’t have usability without a user, and you can’t have a user interface without considering usability.

Panic – Coda one window web development
This looks really cool, but it’s Mac Only, and it’s not really for me. 🙁

How to use WordPress as a Truly Customized CMS (Multiple Headers, Footers, Sidebars and more!)
This is great, I love WordPress, and I’d love to use it as a more full fledged CMS for other sites. This shows you just how to do that.

To Hell with Bad Browsers
I’m writing an article on why people should abandon IE 6, and move on to IE 7 at the very least. It’s based in a large part on Jeffery Zeldman’s awesome article here.

Fan Expo 2008 Review

The All New Comics Booth

The All New Comics Booth

Well, another Fan Expo has come and gone, and having taken Monday to recuperate, I’m ready to put my thoughts down for this year.

It was good, but not great.  I worked a lot, and saw loads of people, but it wasn’t quite as good as last year financially.  There were a few surprises as to what sold, and there was one book that I wasn’t expecting to do as well as it did which shocked pretty much every retailer I spoke to. See you in the funny papers!

Yes, his name is really Al

Yes, his name is really Al

I’m off to Toronto for Fan Expo Canada where I’ll be representing All New Comics with Al, the littlest All New Comics fan. I’m really looking forward to the show, and having 2 nights in a hotel won’t hurt either. Friday night it’s just me and my pillow, but Saturday afternoon Char’s coming down and crashing in my swinging hotel pad! Continue Reading

Why Watchmen should be 2 hours

Dr Manhattan from Watchmen

Dr Manhattan from Watchmen

Apparently there’s a petition out on the interwebs asking mean old Warner Brothers to keep the sanctity of Zack Snyder’s upcoming Watchmen movie in tact and allow a 3 hour cut to be released theatrically.

Watchmen is one of my favourite graphic novels of all time, it’s a fantastic read and it totally re-invented comics in the 1980’s.  It stands on its own as a piece of graphic fiction.  I’m really excited about the movie, it looks like Snyder really “gets” the concept, and has nailed the look.  So would I accept a 3 hour cut?

I say thee NAY! Continue Reading

And now a message from our spammers…

I use Askimet for spam protection, and once a week I go in and read what the Spam Kings of the interwebs are saying about me.  They’re often quite fun, but I always feel bad that these poor Spam Bots get no love, so in an effort to make myself feel better about…myself, I have decided to respond to some of the thoughtful comments of these dear Spam Lords (and hopefully invite some commenting from you lurkers out there who are reading even as I speak…err, write). Movie Review: Hellboy II The Golden Army

Hellboy II The Golden Army

Hellboy II The Golden Army

The first Hellboy movie was a good film.  It had spectacular visuals, it had a good protagonist, it had cool villians, and it told a decent story.

It wasn’t great though.  For all of the “good stuff” about it, there was something missing.  I feel this way with all of Del Toro’s movies (although Pan’s Labirynth was the closest he’s come to having a complete film).  There’s something missing, and I can’t quite put my finger on exactly what it is that would take his stuff to the next level.  That’s why the French call that certain something a “je ne sais quoi”.

The same is true with this movie.  It was good, but it just wasn’t great.  It’s a case of the sum of the parts not equaling up to the whole. Continue Reading

Batman Next, who should the villain be?

The Dark Knight

The Dark Knight

So with The Dark Knight currently at $400 million in 18 days, it’s well on the way to the all time box office record (currently held by James Cameron’s Titanic at 600 million), it is inevitable that a third installment will be filmed.  What’s in question right now is whether or not Christopher Nolan will be at the helm.  If I were Warner Brothers I think I’d dump the proverbial semi-truck of cash to get him back.

Christian Bale has been quoted as saying that Nolan has a theme for the next movie, and since his themes always follow his villains, it’s time to find out who the baddie will be. Continue Reading

Top 10 WordPress Plugins

Not available in stores...the WordPress Plugin Bar <tm>

Not available in stores...the WordPress Plugin Bar

It’s Web Design Wednesdays, and this week I’m going to focus on WordPress.

I’ve been using WordPress for a few months now, and I’ve pretty much settled on a few plugins that I love and which will be on my “default install” for any other sites I make.  There are a couple of plugins on this list that I’m not currently using, but I have them earmarked for other sites.

There are two specific examples; I’m not posting comics here, so there’s not much sense for the ComicPress plugin.  I’m not selling stuff, so there’s not much sense in having the WP eCommerce plugin installed, but they’re both really cool plugins that I’ve played with. Continue Reading

Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2

Wow…talk about a busy weekend.  Not only did we have a garage sale, do lunch with friends, see Grandma and Grandpa, have Char’s sister over, put in a couple of steps, go shopping for some cool stuff, go to Storybook Gardens and visit Rib Fest…TWICE, but I also got some video gaming in this weekend.

Now THAT’s how you have a weekend! Continue Reading
